Convert AVI to MP4

Free, private AVI to MP4 conversion - processed entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

AVI is a 1992-era container that predates streaming - old camcorders, DVD rips, and Windows Movie Maker projects live in it. Modern phones and browsers mostly won't touch it. Converting to MP4/H.264 usually shrinks the file substantially too, because AVI-era codecs like DivX and MJPEG are far less efficient than H.264. The conversion runs privately in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the MP4 so much smaller than my AVI?

Old AVI files typically use inefficient codecs - MJPEG camcorder footage especially. H.264 achieves the same visual quality in a fraction of the bits, so 3-10x size reductions are common on vintage footage.

My AVI won't convert - what's wrong?

Some very old or unusual codecs (Indeo, proprietary DVR formats) aren't supported by the in-browser converter. If conversion fails, try playing the file in VLC and re-saving it first, or check that the file isn't corrupted.
