Frequently asked questions

Does muting a video reduce its quality?

No. For MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, and MKV files the video stream is copied as-is - only the audio track is dropped, so the picture is bit-for-bit identical to the original and the whole job finishes in seconds. Other formats get one light re-encode to MP4.

Can I get the audio back after muting?

No. The muted file has no audio track at all, so there is nothing to restore. Keep your original video as a backup - since processing happens in your browser, the original file on your device is never modified or deleted.

Why would I remove the audio from a video?

Common reasons: reposting a clip with your own voiceover or music, cutting distracting background noise from screen recordings, or avoiding copyright strikes when a video contains licensed music. A silent video also uploads and streams slightly faster because the file is smaller.
